The Russia Football Union has confirmed that the much-anticipated friendly between Russiaโs senior national team and Nigeriaโs Super Eagles will take place at the iconic Luzhniki Stadium in Moscow. Scheduled for Friday, June 6, this fixture marks the first ever meeting between the two nations at the senior level.
Luzhniki Stadium, last used by Russia during their 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying match against Croatia in September 2021, will host the match. The stadium famously staged the 2018 FIFA World Cup final and remains a symbolic venue in global football.
In preparation, the Super Eagles will first compete in an invitational tournament known as the Unity Cup, which kicks off in May. They are set to face Ghana, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago during the competition. Nigeriaโs opening fixture will be against fierce rivals Ghana at the Gtech Community Stadium in London on Wednesday, May 28.
Meanwhile, Russiaโs national team, managed by Valery Karpin, will also face Belarus in Minsk four days after the Nigeria clash, continuing their international schedule.

The confirmation of the Super Eaglesโ friendly against Russia is more than just another fixture it represents a valuable opportunity for growth, exposure, and preparation ahead of future competitive campaigns.
We believe that encounters such as these, staged at historic venues like Luzhniki Stadium, help shape the mental and tactical maturity of our players. Competing against a well-organised Russian side will offer lessons that cannot be simulated in training grounds or domestic matches.
Facing different football cultures sharpens adaptability, a crucial attribute in tournaments where styles vary dramatically from one opponent to the next. For our Super Eagles, this friendly and the Unity Cup before it, must be treated as stepping stones toward building a cohesive, battle-tested squad.
We must urge the coaching staff to use these matches wisely, experimenting with tactics, testing younger talents, and bolstering the teamโs resilience. Only through facing strong adversaries can we expect to mould a side capable of standing tall on the world stage.
These matches are not the destination they are essential parts of the journey towards greatness.
