Flamingos Gear Up for Key U17 World Cup Qualifier vs Algeria in Ikenne

Nigeria’s U17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, are intensifying preparations for their crucial 2024 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup qualifier against Algeria, with the first leg set for this weekend at the Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne, Ogun State.

Under the guidance of head coach Bankole Olowookere, the 2022 World Cup bronze medallists are training at the Remo Stars Sports Institute, fresh off a commanding 5–1 aggregate win over South Africa. They beat the South Africans 3–1 in Pretoria and 2–0 in Ikenne to reach this stage.

Algeria reached this round after overcoming a 2–1 first-leg loss to Botswana by thrashing their opponents 4–0 in the return leg. The Algerian squad is expected to arrive in Lagos by Wednesday evening, with match officials arriving Thursday.

Ugandan referee Shamirah Nabadda will officiate the tie, assisted by a team of officials from Burundi and Uganda. Ghana’s Naa Odofoley Nortey will serve as match commissioner, while Deidre Carmill Zealand of South Africa is the referee assessor.

The second leg will be played on April 25 at the Stade Mustapha Tchaker in Blida, Algeria. The winner over the two legs will qualify for the 2024 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup, to be hosted in Morocco from October 17 to November 8. Africa will be represented by five teams, including the host nation.
