Frank Onyeka has opened up about the emotional toll of being left out of Nigeria’s final squad for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Zimbabwe, saying he was saddened by the decision. The midfielder, who is currently on loan at Augsburg from Brentford, was initially named in head coach Eric Chelle’s 39-man provisional list but did not make the final 23 man selection.
The 27 year old expressed his disappointment but reaffirmed his commitment to the national team. “I was quite sad about it, but again, the coach knows best. Hopefully, I’ll be available for the next games. I’m always ready,” Onyeka said.
Despite being omitted, Onyeka has had a solid season in the Bundesliga, with 25 appearances and one assist to his name. The Super Eagles, meanwhile, beat Rwanda 2-0 and drew 1-1 with Zimbabwe but currently sit fourth in Group C with seven points six behind group leaders South Africa.
Looking ahead, Onyeka remains hopeful. “We are in a difficult situation, but there’s still a chance. We just need to win our next four games, and hopefully, we can qualify,” he added.
He is expected to feature in the Unity Cup in May at the Brentford Community Stadium and could also be called up for the friendly against Russia in June.
